According to the old sources Vetulonia was one of the most powerful
etruscan town. Such as Populonia, also Vetulonia had to his prosperity
and its power at the exploitation of the metalliferous mines ( copper,
silver, lead).
The necropolis contains various tombs datable between IX and VII
century a.C..
The relative documentation at the VI century a.C. is nearly completalyabsent;
so it has been supposed the conquest or the destruction of Vetulonia by
Roselle.
A revival we observeat the beginning of III century a.C. (ex: the
restoration of the surrounding wall), but the data of thefollowing period
and also the roman age are scanty.
Are visitable:

the rests of a surrounding wall (VI century a.C.)

some big tumula of the late eastern period (end of VII century a.C.)

The Diavolino I's tumulus has been dismounted and rebuilt in the Archaeologic
Museum of Florence.
